Marco Borriello opened the scoring for the Rossoneri on 55 minutes from close range, but les Gones created a number of chances, particularly in the second half, and deservedly found an equaliser when Briand headed home ten minutes from time.
The competition at the home of Arsenal witnessed two draws yesterday, with the hosts playing out a 1-1 draw with Milan, while Celtic came from 2-0 down to tie with Lyon. Both sides knew a win would put them in an excellent position to clinch the trophy, and the match saw plenty of goalscoring opportunities at either end.
However it wasn't until ten minutes after half time that the deadlock was broken, and it came from the boot of Milan forward Marco Borriello.
A long ball through the centre was expertly controlled by the Italian, who attempted to round the goalkeeper, but as the ball broke to Verdi, he showed composure to roll the ball back to Borriello, who bundled the ball into the net from inside the six yard box.
Lyon however were undeterred by going behind, and set about immediately hitting back. Pjanic and Kallstrom both went close as Milan were pushed back into their own territory, and the inevitable equaliser arrived with ten minutes to go thanks to new signing Jimmy Briand.
The 24-year old, who made the switch to the Champions League semi finalists in the close season, bravely headed home under pressure past Marco Amelia, and the French side were handed the goal that their efforts more than deserved.
As things stand in the group, where points are also awarded for goals scored, Lyon lead the way with 5 points, but both Arsenal and Celtic, who meet this afternoon, know that a victory will allow them to clinch the cup.
